Girls A.C.T. (Activists Creating and Transforming) is a summer employment program committed to creating safe spaces for growth, mentorship, and leadership development of Suffolk County’s Latina youth. Girls A.C.T. falls under the umbrella of SEPA Mujer Inc., a non-profit LatinaImmigrant Women’s Rights Organization dedicated to the empowerment, education, and activism of Latina women on Long Island.
This summer, I had the honor to be a mentor to four young Latina women from Long Island. The girls had the opportunity to learn about community organizing, feminism, social justice, mental health, policy research, grant writing and so much more. We had the pleasure of meeting Assemblywoman Catalina Cruz in Queens, NY and also visiting Stony Brook University. I introduced a photography project where the girls can take images of objects, places, and people that reflect who they are and the story they would like to share with the world. These images will be showcased at their closing ceremony/art show in August 2019.
